Install and Setup PPTP VPN on ubuntu


The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is an obsolete method for implementing virtual private networks. PPTP has many well known security issues, and here is how to install pptp vpn on ubuntu.

1. Doing update on ubuntu system
apt get update && apt get upgrade

2. Install PPTP Module
sudo apt-get install pptpd -y

3. Add dns
sudo nano /etc/ppp/pptpd-options
use google dns

4. Add users to PPTP
sudo nano /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
username1 pptpd password1 *
username2 pptpd password2 *

5. Setup IP Forwarding
sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf
net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1

6. Restart PPTP Service
/etc/init.d/pptpd restart

7. Add forward rule in iptables
sudo sysctl -p && sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE

And now PPTP VPN service is ready to use
